Teacher Residency Licensure

Program Overview

Johnston Community College’s Residency Licensure Programs provide alternative pathways to teacher licensure for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field. Candidates may begin teaching while completing required coursework and professional preparation in one of three licensure areas: Elementary Education, Birth–Kindergarten, or Special Education.

Elementary Education Residency Licensure

Start your teaching career with Johnston Community College’s Elementary Education Residency Licensure program. Designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field, this program lets you begin teaching while earning your licensure. You’ll gain the skills and knowledge needed to become a confident, effective elementary educator in North Carolina’s public and charter schools.

Birth–Kindergarten (B-K) Residency Licensure

The Birth Through Kindergarten Residency Licensure prepares future educators with the knowledge, practical experience, and teaching skills needed to support children from birth through kindergarten. Through coursework focused on child development, early learning, and classroom practice, students build the competencies required for certification.

Special Education Residency Licensure

The Special Education Residency Licensure provides the coursework and training needed to develop the pedagogical skills required for licensure as a Special Education teacher in North Carolina. This program is designed for individuals seeking to enter the teaching profession and support students with diverse learning needs.
