Program Overview

Johnston Community College offers courses to help you meet the Johnston County Board of Education's requirements for becoming a Highly Qualified (HQ) Teacher Assistant. Whether you’re currently employed or looking for a new career opportunity, this training will give you the skills needed to succeed in the classroom.

Our program is designed to meet the Johnston County Board of Education's requirements, ensuring you become a Highly Qualified (HQ) Teacher Assistant. This status enhances your employability within Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS).

Program Structure:

  1. Pathways to Teacher Assistant (48 hours)
  2. Content: Focuses on essential skills like classroom management, understanding Exceptional Children (EC) laws, and basic computer proficiency.
  3. Format: Hybrid model with 3 hours of in-person instruction and 3 hours of online learning each week.
  4. Registration Fee: $125 (Fee waivers available for eligible individuals).
  5. Teacher Assistant Training Level One (48 hours)
  6. Content: Delves deeper into classroom skills, including discipline strategies, effective communication, and EC issues.
  7. Format: Hybrid model with both in-person and online sessions.
  8. Registration Fee: $130 plus CPR card cost.
  9. Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Pathways to Teacher Assistant course.
