Nurse Aide

Certified Nurse Aides, or CNAs, play a vital role in patient care, helping with daily activities like bathing, dressing, and feeding. You’ll also learn to check vital signs, such as temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure—essential skills in any healthcare setting.

Program Overview

As a Nurse Aide you’ll work under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse, or RN, but you will not have a license.

We offer a Nurse Aide Pathway diploma, or you can register for our Nurse Aide I course.

The following health programs at Johnston Community College require that all entering students be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry in order to be admitted: Associate Degree Nursing, Cardiovascular Sonography, and Medical Sonography -  Please refer to the Admission Policy for those programs for dates to be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry.

How Do I Get Started?

  1. Admissions Requirements

    Nurse Aide I: Must be at least 16.5 years old at the start of the course.

    Nurse Aide II: Must be at least 18 years old and listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.

    Phlebotomy: Must be at least 18 years old before the first clinical rotation.

    Electrocardiogram Technician: Must be at least 18 years old before clinical rotations.

    Nurse Aide I: No prerequisites.

    Nurse Aide II:

    Must have successfully completed Nurse Aide I.

    Must be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry with no substantiated findings.

    Must hold a current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification.

    Phlebotomy: No prerequisites.

    Electrocardiogram Technician: No prerequisites.

    Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (must remain valid for the entire course).

    Two-step Tuberculosis skin test.

    Up-to-date immunizations, including:

    Hepatitis B (or signed waiver)

    Measles, Mumps, and Rubella

    Varicella (Chickenpox)

    Tetanus (within last 10 years)

    Seasonal Influenza (flu shot)

    Physical Examination (Required for Nurse Aide I, Nurse Aide II, and Phlebotomy).

    Background Check and Drug Screening (Required for all programs before clinical).

    Must wear student uniform to class.

    Must wear white nonskid leather shoes.

    Nurse Aide I & II – Stethoscope.

    Name Badge.

  2. Registration Process

    Our nurse aide course requires certain items for class, lab and clinicals. Due to the nature of the requirements, all students planning to take NAS 101 are required to attend a mandatory orientation session. 

    Please register for the session that works best for you.

    Note: Class space is limited and enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Spring, Summer & Fall

    Register for Orientation

    Submit Required Documents to the Health Education or Nurse Aide Faculty in the Elsee Building:

    Completed Registration Form.

    Copies of photo identification, Social Security card, and educational documents.

    Proof of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification (if required for your program).

    Register and Complete Clinical Requirements

    Pay tuition and fees.

    Schedule and complete background check, drug screening, physical examination, and immunizations.

  3. Policies

    Attendance is Mandatory. Missing more than eight hours of class, lab, or clinical time may result in dismissal.

    Punctuality is Required. Students are considered tardy one minute after the scheduled start time.

    Minimum Passing Score: 78% (no rounding of grades).

    Students must pass ALL components (classroom, lab, and clinical) to successfully complete the course.

    100% Refund if withdrawing before the first class.

    75% Refund if withdrawing within the first 10% of the class duration.

    Transfers to another section depend on availability.
