Learn to ride safely and confidently with our Motorcycle Basic Rider Courses. The courses are designed for beginners with little to no experience—or those with a learner’s permit—prepare you for the road with essential riding techniques and safety training.
Basic Rider Course Level 1 (BRC1) – Beginner Level
This physically demanding course is tailored for individuals new to motorcycling. It covers essential skills required to ride safely on North Carolina roads.
No prior motorcycle experience is needed, but basic skills are required. Successful completion exempts you from the NC DMV motorcycle riding exam.
First Half: Covers motorcycle controls, straight-line riding, shifting, turning, and stopping exercises.
Second Half: Focuses on street riding strategies, emergency braking, swerving, and cornering techniques.
Participants must:
Complete the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic eCourse online prior to attending. Login instructions will be emailed one week before the course. If not received, contact ltwhite@johnstoncc.edu.
Submit the eCourse completion certificate via email at least 3 days before class to secure a spot.
Possess a valid photo driver’s license.
Be at least 16 years old.
Participants under 18 must provide written consent from a parent or guardian, who
must attend the first class to sign a waiver.
Wear appropriate riding gear:
DOT-approved helmet, over-the-ankle footwear, long pants, long-sleeved shirt or jacket,
full-fingered gloves, and eye protection.
Use a motorcycle provided by JCC during the course.
Additional Information:
Be prepared for various weather conditions. Classes will proceed unless a campus-wide closure is announced.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an NC license riding test waiver "Graduate" card.
Basic Rider Course Level 2 (BRC2) – Skills Practice
Designed for riders with a motorcycle permit and basic riding experience, this course builds essential riding skills and confidence for the open road.
One-day riding course for seasoned riders preparing for the endorsement.
Note: To receive a License Testing Waiver "Graduate" Card for North Carolina, completion
of Basic Rider Course Level 1 is required.

Attendance Policy
Full attendance is mandatory for all sessions. Late arrivals will not be permitted
to join, and missed time cannot be made up. No refunds are provided for absences or
tardiness.
The Motorcycle Safety Education: Basic Rider Courses are Self-Supporting (SEF) courses
are not eligible for refunds unless the course is canceled by JCC. Transfers may be
denied. Review JCC's refund policy.
Courses will be listed when the next term begins. If you do not see the courses you are interested in registering for, it is not available at this time.
