Johnston Community College and Corning Incorporated Collaborate on Fiber Optic Training
Course
Johnston Community College (JCC) has partnered with Corning Incorporated, a global leader in optical communications technology, to introduce an advanced Train-the-Trainer
Fiber Optic Technician Course
This collaboration comes at a critical moment, as the nation faces urgent demand for skilled technicians to support the rapid expansion of broadband infrastructure, specifically in rural America.
Hosted on JCC’s main campus in Smithfield, the five-day Train-the-Trainer Fiber Optic Technician Course empowers faculty to teach students using the Corning Fiber Broadband Technician (CFBT) program. This program provides students with hands-on training in key areas, including optical fiber network design, splicing, and field deployment. By teaching JCC faculty through this Train-the-Trainer model, the college ensures that students gain access to high-quality, industry-driven training, fueling long-term workforce development in a rapidly expanding field. The effort also positions JCC on the front lines of closing the workforce gap in digital infrastructure, particularly for underserved communities in Johnston County and beyond.
“Broadband access is a necessity for education, health care, and economic growth,” said JCC President Dr. Vern L. Lindquist. “Through this partnership with Corning, JCC will be able to offer classes this fall to prepare highly skilled technicians who will bring connectivity and opportunity to families and businesses across our region.”
“At Corning, we believe that access to reliable, high-speed broadband is essential
for driving economic growth and expanding opportunity in rural America," said Jennifer
Heavner, Senior Manager, Customer Education & Programs Marketing at Corning. "We're
proud to be collaborating with JCC, leveraging Corning's decades of experience in
fiber optics to equip trainers with the skills to educate the next generation of broadband
technicians. Together, we’ll help transform lives and communities through the power
of fiber connectivity."
As billions in federal and private investment flow into broadband expansion, including
in Johnston County, JCC’s commitment to equipping skilled fiber optic technicians
will help ensure that North Carolina remains at the forefront of digital transformation.
Fiber Optic Technician classes will be offered starting in October at JCC’s new Advanced Manufacturing Facility in Four Oaks.
