SMITHFIELD, N.C. (April 30, 2026) - Johnston Community College’s Beta Zeta Theta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa held its spring induction ceremony on April 30, welcoming 132 new members into the honor society.
Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for students at two-year colleges, recognizing academic achievement while also promoting leadership development, service and fellowship among high-achieving students. Of those inducted, 23 students participated in the formal ceremony, taking the oath of membership and lighting candles in a symbolic tradition.
The evening featured keynote speaker Heather Eveleigh, an alumna of JCC’s Beta Zeta Theta chapter. Eveleigh began her academic journey at JCC through the Early Education program and graduated in May 2025. She is currently continuing her education at Campbell University, where she is pursuing a degree in Political Science and is expected to graduate next fall.
Speaking to inductees, Eveleigh emphasized the lasting impact of the honor society experience.
“PTK recognizes academic excellence, but it is so, so much more than an honor society. It's a community that builds leaders. It is a place where friendships form, where service becomes new and where you discover strengths that you didn't know you had. It pushes you, supports you, and prepares you for opportunities you will use in the future and maybe not imagined you have for yourself,” Eveleigh said.
Remarks were also delivered by Vice President of Instruction Dr. Marc David and JCC President Dr. Vern Lindquist, who both recognized the achievements of the inductees and the importance of academic honor societies in fostering student success.
The ceremony also included leadership transitions within the Beta Zeta Theta chapter. Reagan Sizemore was sworn in as chapter president, succeeding outgoing president Stephanie Cruz Aburto. Additionally, Amber Rackley was sworn in as vice president of public relations and social media.
The Beta Zeta Theta chapter continues to provide opportunities for students at Johnston Community College to engage in academic enrichment, leadership development, and service initiatives, reinforcing the college’s commitment to student achievement and success beyond the classroom.
