While the JCC campus is closed, students are encouraged to utilize the college's online tutoring service, SmarThinking, which is available via each BlackBoard course under the Tools link. SmarThinking offers scheduled tutoring, drop-in tutoring, submit a question tutoring, and a Writing Center which includes essay review. Students should keep in mind that these services are limited to 8 hours per student; however, SmarThinking also offers a wealth of videos and other links that are not tutor-based and do not count toward the 8-hour maximum. Students utilizing SmarThinking should turn-off pop-up blockers before beginning because much of the digital content opens in a new window. Students who need additional assistance navigating SmarThinking should send an email to the Academic Skills Center at jcctutoringcenter@johnstoncc.edu

In addition to SmarThinking, the Academic Skills Center is offering virtual tutoring appointments with the Academic Skills Center's current tutoring staff. Students who would like to register for tutoring appointments should send an email to jcctutoringcenter@johnstoncc.edu. Students are asked to include their telephone number and course in the email. Please note that students will be required to download Skype for Business as the platform for online tutoring.

The scholarship portal can be accessed at any time/place via JCC's website.
Our Information Technology Department has provided us with two temporary access points, or, WiFi Hot Spot Zones, where JCC students can park on campus and work remotely on homework and online assignments, free of charge.  These WiFi Hot Spot Zones can be found at the Health-Sciences and Learning Resource Center Buildings on the main campus in Smithfield (see image below for reference).
Campus Map with WiFi locations presented. The Wifi Spots are in front of the Health Building and behind the LRB.

In order to comply with Governor Cooper’s executive order regarding social distancing, these regulations must be adhered to:

  • Hours of Operation (subject to change)
    • Monday – Friday      8:00 AM to 8:00 PM
    • Weekends                 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM
  • To connect to the hot spot, look for the “JCC-Public-WiFi” network.
  • Unfortunately, there will not be any onsite technical support – use of the public WiFi network is “self-serve.”
  • Use of public WiFi is restricted to JCC students currently enrolled in the Spring 2020 semester, only.
  • Access is available in the parking lots in front of the Health-Sciences Building (Building “F”) and behind the Learning Resource Center (Building “E”)
  • Users must remain in vehicles while on campus and have JCC student ID card and/or a copy of current class schedule in possession.
  • NO access is permitted to buildings.
  • Access to WiFi HotZone service is a privilege and will be revoked, as needed, for misconduct or failure to comply with rules.

A grade of Incomplete Emergency (IE) may be assigned to any student who needs additional time to complete spring semester 2020 course work. The student is responsible for making arrangements with the instructor to accomplish the required work needed to remove the IE by the date established by the instructor. A student cannot graduate with an IE on their record if the course is required for graduation. If the student fails to complete the prescribed course requirements, the grade of Withdraw Emergency (WE) will be assigned by the registrar.
