North Carolina Truck Driver Training School
Application Requirements

In order to be considered for acceptance to the NC Truck Driver Training School, you MUST complete all APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS listed below. 

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be a US citizen or a Permanent Resident Alien.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English at a level that permits the student to benefit from the course.
  • Must apply to Johnston Community College (JCC). Complete Step 1 and Step 2.  To apply in person, contact the JCC Student Success Center during normal business hours.
  • Must have a current NC Driver License.
  • Must have a current Class A Commercial Learner Permit. To obtain a copy of your current Class A Commercial Learner Permit, contact your local Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) office.  The application fee is $43.25 and the permit fee is $21.50.  Here are Class A Commercial Learner Permit practice tests.  Here is the Commercial Driver License Manual (PDF).
  • Must have a current DOT Medical Card. Schedule your DOT physical at any Urgent Care Clinic, like CVS, Walgreens or Fast Med.  The cost can range from $100 to $150.
  • Must have a NC Driving Record, dated within three months of the first day of your class. Obtain your NC Driving Record at NC Department of Transportation (DOT) Driving Records.  Order the “Complete Extract Copy”.  The cost is $10.75.  Any of the following violations dated within the past four years of the first day of your class will prohibit you from entering the course:
    • Driving while impaired (DWI).
    • Careless and reckless driving.
    • Hit and run.
    • Refusal to take a chemical test.
  • Must complete an orientation packet. An in-person appointment will be scheduled to complete the packet a few weeks before the first day of class.
  • Must pass a DOT drug-screening test. After completion of your orientation packet, you will be sent to our approved DOT drug testing facility.  Must bring $40 CASH to pay directly to the drug testing facility.
  • Must pay tuition in full by the due date. Upon receipt of your negative drug test results, you will be registered for class. You will receive an email that your TUITION is due. It must be paid by the Wednesday before your first day of class.

Orientation and Drug Test must be completed no later than 2 weeks before the start date of each class.
