Program Overview:
The Johnston Community College Fire Academy is an intensive program that prepares cadets for careers in the fire service. The Academy is split between two distinctive blocks.
The first block provides certifications in Firefighter, Incident Command System, Traffic
Incident Management, and Hazardous Materials.
The second block focuses on NC Technical Rescuer and Vehicle Rescuer.
Upon completion of the Fire Academy, cadets will receive the following International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certifications through the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal, Fire and
Rescue Commission:
- Firefighter NFPA 1001, 2019 edition
- Hazardous Materials Operations NFPA 1072, 2017 edition
- Technical Rescue NFPA 1006 (Chapter 5- General & Chapter 6 - Ropes), 2013 edition
- Technical Rescuer Vehicle NFPA 1006, 2013 edition
Cadets will participate in classroom instruction, hands on training, and physical conditioning in a structured environment. Our purpose is to instill integrity, discipline, character, and credibility while learning the fundamentals of being a firefighter.
Full participation is required for successful completion and Academy Graduation.

- Cadets must have a High School diploma or GED to attend the academy

- Cadets are recommended to be affiliated with a Fire Department or Emergency Services agency with firefighting duties, or provide their own personal protective equipment that meets NFPA standards.
Cost(s)/Fee(s):
The fee for this course is $180.00 per block for students NOT affiliated with a Fire Department.
Uniform:
Cadets will be responsible for purchasing Academy uniforms and must be ordered and paid for prior to the start of the academy.
