Program Description

The Cardiovascular Sonography curriculum provides the individual with the knowledge and skills necessary to acquire, process, and evaluate the human heart and vascular structures. A cardiovascular sonographer uses high frequency sound waves to produce images of the heart and vascular structures.

Program Content

Course work includes effective communication and patient care skills combined with knowledge of physics, human anatomy, physiology, and pathology, all of which are essential to obtaining high quality sonographic images.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates may be eligible to apply to the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers for examinations in cardiovascular physics, vascular physics, and adult echocardiography. Graduates may find employment in hospitals, physicians' offices, mobile services, and educational institutions.

Program Mission

The mission of the cardiovascular sonography program is to graduate safe practitioners capable of performing as diagnotic medical sonographers and prepared to sit for the national certification exams.

Programs Goals

  • To prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains for the abdominal sonography-extended and obstetrics and gynecology sonography concentrations.
  • To prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor  (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains for the adult cardiac and vascular  sonography concentrations.
  • Graduate individuals capable of passing the National Certification Examinations.
  • Maintain CAAHEP Program Accreditation and plan for annual program reviews and re-accreditation.
  • Maintain qualified, competent faculty by providing appropriate educational opportunities.
  • Encourage Continuing Education opportunities for post-graduates, sonographers, and physicians.
  • Perform curriculum reviews and make revisions in conjunction with the NCCCS, the CAAHEP  standards for program accreditation, and the needs of the diagnostic medical sonography profession.
  • Evaluate and monitor the admission criteria and selection process.
  • Continue and institute new ideas in recruiting students for imaging technologies.
  • Maintain scan lab equipment in good working order, available for student practice sessions.
  • Encourage involvement in local, state, and national professional societies.
  • Provide a database for jobs in the imaging profession within the surrounding medical community.
  • Foster the lifelong learning concept to our graduates and diagnostic medical sonographers by supporting Continuing Education opportunities.
