Course Description

Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom course will cover practical teaching strategies to enhance the development of literacy in Pre-k and elementary age children that ensure all students acquire the foundational literacy skills necessary to read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex texts necessary for future success. Students will learn strategies and instructional procedure that foster meaningful learning opportunities for their students that align with the literacy goals for NC schools. The research-based practices taught in this class will support diverse populations, student assessment driven planning and instruction to meet the needs of the individual child, and 21^st century literacy strategies that will help teachers transform learning of literacy skills such as reading and writing with digital devices.

Upon successful completion of this CEU, students will be able to:

Apply practical teaching strategies to enhance the development of literacy in Pre-k and elementary age children that ensure all students acquire the foundational literacy skills necessary to read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex texts
Demonstrate strategies and instructional procedure that foster meaningful learning opportunities for their students that align with the literacy goals for NC schools
Practice student assessment driven planning and instruction to meet the needs of the individual child
Integrate the use of digital devises to teach literacy skills such as reading and writing.

Students are encouraged to explore resources utilized in the development of this course to further strengthen learning of various course topics. Resources utilized in this course can be found under the "Resources" button on the left hand menu in Blackboard.

Before enrolling in an Internet-based/online course at Johnston Community College, you should have access to a reliable computer with Internet. You should also be very comfortable demonstrating the following competencies:

Computer operation and start-up.
Setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting through technical assistance resources from your Internet Service Provider.
Understand and have knowledge of basic word processing.
Basic Internet skills.
Knowledge of using e-mail.
Knowledge of how to save a document and attach/upload a document
Knowledge of creating, uploading and sharing a YouTube video

Cable modem or Broadband internet connections - Dial-up internet connection is NOT recommended for internet classes

Computer software/apps that have the capabilities of watching video content (ex. YouTube videos, .wav, .rm)

Pre-Registration Requirements

No LATE registration accepted.

Student must provide an accurate email address. Log-in information will be sent to that email 3-5 days prior to the start of the class. If no email has arrived from JCC, email the Department Chair of the Education Programs to follow-up before the class begins. No refunds will be provided for failure to log in.
