BSAC (Basic School Age Care)

Johnston Community College is the first college in North Carolina to offer BSAC on-line. The state of North Carolina requires BSAC training for school-age professionals who plan and ensure the implementation of daily activities or supervise groups of school-age children in licensed child care programs.

Course Information

Course Description

School age care providers are crucial to the development of children and youth into successful, competent adults. BSAC and it's accompanying materials including the participant guide manual have been developed to assist these providers in their important work.

IMPORTANT : NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN TO A STUDENT WHO IS TAKING A SELF-SUPPORTING CLASS. (Example: A class with SEF code).

Intended Audience

Early Childhood & After-school care program teachers & administrators and other professionals working with school-age children.

Course Objectives

1 Learners will be able to list the steps to proper table washing and hand washing procedures.
2 Learners will be able to sketch quality indoor and outdoor program environments.
3 Learners will be able to name and define the four domains of children’s development.
4 Learners will be able to plan a developmentally appropriate activity for school-age children using the 5 key points of planning an activity.
5 Learners will be able to identify six key considerations for guiding children’s behavior and how those are impacted by staff or environment.
6 Learners will be able to identify the six elements of quality school age care.

Course Outline

The modules in BSAC will cover the elements of quality care, child development, positive guidance, age appropriate activities, environmental design, health/safety, nutrition, and NC Child Care Regulations. Students will get the same information as a face to face class, but through distance learning.

Requirements for Successful Completion of this Course

There are no required course textbook materials. Students are encouraged to further explore resources utilized in the development of this course to further strengthen learning of various course topics.

Before enrolling in an Internet-based/online course at Johnston Community College, you should have access to a reliable computer with Internet. You should also be very comfortable demonstrating the following competencies:
- Computer operation and start-up.
- Setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting through technical assistance resources from your Internet Service Provider.
- Understand and have knowledge of basic word processing.
- Basic Internet skills.
- Knowledge of using e-mail.
- Knowledge of how to save a document and attach/upload a document

No LATE registration accepted.

Student must provide an accurate email address. Log-in information will be sent to that email 3-5 days prior to the start of the class. If no email has arrived from JCC, email the Department Chair of the Education Programs to follow-up before the class begins. No refunds will be provided for failure to log in.
