The ABC's of Early Literacy

Participants will learn about planning an enriched language environment, support children's phonological and phonetics skills, and obtain ideas and resources for sound and listening games in the early childhood setting. This online class meets a part (.5 CEU) of the required literacy component needed for teacher licensure renewal.

This CEU will offer appropriate background and techniques for preschool teachers when assisting children with Phonological and Phonemic Awareness skills as a component of Early Literacy. Participants will learn about planning an enriched language environment and obtain ideas and resources for sound and listening games in the early childhood setting.

IMPORTANT : NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN TO A STUDENT WHO IS TAKING A SELF-SUPPORTING CLASS. (Example: A class with SEF code).

Intended Audience

Early Childhood & Elementary school teachers, administrators and other professionals working with young children.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this CEU, students will be able to:

- Explain the importance of phonemic awareness in facilitiating early literacy development in young children.
- Recognize various alphabet techniques and materials to use with children.
- Design activities to enhance pre-reading phonemic awareness skills.
- Develop strategies to assist children with special literacy challenges.

Course Outline

This 5 hour (.5 CEU credit) online course was designed to provide participants with information about the development of early literacy skills in young children. Specific emphasis will be placed on utilizing developmentally appropriate techniques for facilitating phonological / phonemic awareness and pre-reading skills in preschool age children. The session will focus on enhancing literacy rich environments with the use of listening games, vocabulary enrichment activities, and games for alphabet letter names and sounds.

There are no required course textbook materials. Students are encouraged to further explore resources utilized in the development of this course to further strengthen learning of various course topics.

Before enrolling in an Internet-based/online course at Johnston Community College, you should have access to a reliable computer with Internet. You should also be very comfortable demonstrating the following competencies:
- Computer operation and start-up.
- Setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting through technical assistance resources from your Internet Service Provider.
- Understand and have knowledge of basic word processing.
