Children need to be equipped with 21st century skills. But what are these 21st century skills? We will discover how to incorporate these skills into the early childhood classroom including using STEM and STEAM.

Course Description

In this technological rich, knowledge driven century, the demand for our children to be able to compete globally are greater than ever before. In order to be successful, children need to be equipped with 21st century skills. But what are these 21st century skills? In this 5-hour (.5 CEU credit) session, we will explore 21st century skills, what they are, and why they are important. We will also discuss how to incorporate these skills into the early childhood classroom including using STEM and STEAM.

IMPORTANT : NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN TO A STUDENT WHO IS TAKING A SELF-SUPPORTING CLASS. (Example: A class with SEF code).

Intended Audience

Early Childhood & Elementary school teachers, administrators and other professionals working with young children.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this CEU, students will be able to:
- Define 21st Century Skills.
- Identify the 4C’s of 21st Century Skills
- Discuss the importance of teaching children using the 21st Century Skills.
- Explain STEM and STEAM and how they relate to 21st Century Skills.
- Assess the use of 21st Century Skills in a classroom.
- Design activities using the 4C’s of 21st Century Skills.
- Reflect on the use of 21st Century Skills in their teaching practice.

Before enrolling in an Internet-based/online course at Johnston Community College, you should have access to a reliable computer with Internet. You should also be very comfortable demonstrating the following competencies:
- Computer operation and start-up.
- Setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting through technical assistance resources from your Internet Service Provider.
- Understand and have knowledge of basic word processing.
- Basic Internet skills.
- Knowledge of using e-mail.
- Knowledge of how to save a document and attach/upload a document
