Information Technology

Course work includes development of a student’s ability to create, store, communicate, exchange and use information to solve technical issues related to information support and services, interactive media, network systems, programming and software development, information security and other emerging technologies based on the selected area of study.

*Although several classes prepare students for industry-recognized certification exams, these exams are not course requirements.  Students who have current industry certifications are allowed to request Credit by Life Experience for current industry certifications (and their exams).

Emphasis is placed on a hands-on approach to learning.  Students can specialize in network management (including system administrationand security) or Cybersecurity (inclusive of Python Ethical Hacking, system administration, and analysis). 

*Students have opportunities for both Certificates and Diplomas while progressing toward the degree. Likewise, student participation in the JCC IT Academy enhances coursework and opens additional employment possibilities. 

Graduates should qualify for employment in entry-level positions with businesses, educational systems, and governmental agencies that rely on computer systems to design and manage information. The program will incorporate the competencies of industry-recognized certification exams. 

Students completing the Network Management concentration are prepared to take the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CORE) as well as the Cisco Certified Network Professional (ENCORE) certification exams. Emphasis is placed on supporting the network and data center. 

Students completing the Cybersecurity concentration are prepared for positions as tier-one technicians for Security Operations Centers (SOCs) as well as data center security specialists. Additional coursework is included for log analysis as well as Python programming with Ethical Hacking. 

*Students and graduates can utilize internship and co-op opportunities with business partners to facilitate job experience which is paramount for full-time opportunities. 

*Internship/Co-op Partners include South River EMC, JCC IT Department, Johnston County Bar Association, Belcan, Grifols, First Citizens Bank, Truist Bank, and others.
