ENG 241

This course covers selected works in British literature from its beginnings to the Romantic
Period. Emphasis is placed on historical background, cultural context, and literary analysis of
selected prose, poetry, and drama.

Course Description

Upon completion, students should be able to interpret, analyze, and respond to literary works in their historical and cultural contexts.
Note: In accordance with the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement, this course has been approved to satisfy the Universal General Education Transfer Component requirement for humanities/fine arts in A.A. and A.S. degree programs. This course has been approved to
meet the humanities/fine arts requirement in A.A.S. degree programs.

Course Objectives

1. Engage in careful reading and critical analysis of representative works of British literature from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Restoration, and eighteenth century.
2. Describe the major historical, political, social, religious, and cultural influences on the literature and writers of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Restoration periods.
3. Define key literary concepts that are used to analyze poetry, prose, and drama, such as plot, character, theme, setting, point of view, tone and style, voice, denotation and connotation, imagery, figurative language, rhythm, rhyme, irony, structure, symbol, archetype, myth, dramatic action, characterization, and dialogue.
4. Define important literary traditions, movements, genres, and concepts of the literature of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Restoration, and eighteenth centuries.
5. Complete a critical analysis of a literary work from one of the major periods of study.
6. Make an oral presentation on an author from one of the major periods of study and include an analysis of a representative work of that author.
7. Summarize major characteristics of Old English Middle English, and the English of Shakespeare and his contemporaries.
