Course Information

Course Description

This course is the required first course in a series of two designed to develop the ability to produce clear expository prose. Emphasis is placed on the writing process including audience analysis, topic selection, thesis support and development, editing, and revision. Upon completion, students should be able to produce unified, coherent, well-developed essays using standard written English. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement general education core requirement in English composition.

Course Objectives

Practice and refine grammar, mechanics, and basic language skills.
Develop the ability to read and think critically using in class text material and secondary sources.
Use writing as a form of inquiry
Recognize writing as a rhetorical skill/art
Recognize modes, different uses of writing, audiences, purposes, and genres
View and practice writing as a process
Work collaboratively and cooperatively to evaluate writing of both his/her own and other’s writing
Learn research skills, source evaluation, and MLA documentation
Cultivate technological skills through class assignments and presentations
