They were chosen from among 8 applicants to be awarded a portion of more than $200,000 in scholarships.

“JCC has been a great experience for me, said Davenport. The instructors at JCC have been very insightful and helpful. I am grateful for being chosen as one of the first recipients of the Engineering Department Annual Scholarship to help me continue pursuing my associate degree in engineering.”

Davenport completed three semesters at JCC, taking on college courses while still in high school through the Career and College Promise (CCP) program. After completing his studies at JCC, he plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering at North Carolina State University.

Issa is excited about the opportunities the scholarship provides. He has been involved with several student clubs at JCC, serving as an Honors Experience Ambassador, member of the JoCo Robos team, and Research Officer for the Engineering Club.

“I’ve been able to expand my horizons at JCC, shared Issa. My instructors genuinely care about students and spend extra time supporting me with initiatives I’m passionate about. It’s also great to participate in events such as Engineering week where students showcase projects and talk to administrators who are interested and invested in the projects we create.”

Issa also recently participated on the f(x) First in Orbit team. Composed of students from the middle school to university level, the team is focused on the design, creation, and deployment of a small, 10cm^3 satellite known as a cubesat. Cubesats are both educational and industrial tools that allow for students, companies, and the public to put their own satellite in space.

The Engineering Department Annual Scholarship is funded by proceeds from the annual STEM summer camps hosted by the Engineering Department at JCC. The student-led camps are coordinated by engineering students at JCC, and provides them with an opportunity to give back to the community while developing their leadership skills.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be enrolled full-time in the engineering program and have at least a 2.5 GPA. Students financial need as well as academic performance are taken into consideration.
