Smithfield, NC – The U.S. Economic Development Administration announced that a statewide coalition led by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center will receive nearly $25 million from the Build Back Better Regional Challenge, pending State Board approval.
Ten community colleges in the coalition will benefit from a portion of the funding, with JCC directly receiving $1.4 million to support new and existing equipment for its Biotechnology program.
The “Accelerate NC – Life Sciences Manufacturing” project was one of 21 chosen from 60 highly competitive applications during the second phase of the national award process.
The funding will also help expand and promote training and career opportunities in life sciences manufacturing across the state.
Johnston Community College and its industry partners, like Novo Nordisk and Grifols, work together to prepare individuals for high tech, well-paying jobs in the biotechnology sector for one of the fastest growing counties in the state. JCC’s state-of-the-art facilities are located at the Workforce Development Center in Clayton, where highly-skilled faculty provide real world training.
"We are excited to bring new technology and equipment to our Clayton location, while further strengthening the talent pipeline for life sciences in our region,” says JCC’s Interim President Dr. Kenneth A. Boham.
Johnston Community College offers an associate degree in BioProcess Technology, as well as BioWork and Delta V certifications.
