JCC Receives $198,986 Grant from Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas

Funds will be used to support apprenticeship program.
Johnston Community College today announced a $198,986 investment from Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas. The funds will be used to connect students with hands-on training and career development opportunities.
The investment will be used to develop and purchase equipment for the new Johnston County Apprenticeship Program (JCAP) which will provide on-the-job training at participating companies for applied engineering degree and electrical certificate students. Caterpillar, CMC Electric, and Novo Nordisk are the first industries to become registered apprenticeships in the program.
“JCC is gaining momentum in the newly formed Johnston County Apprenticeship Program,” said Joy Callahan, dean of workforce development and advanced technologies. “Several industries have been a part of numerous informational meetings and have been integral in the design of the program. Although this grant fund is crucial for students focusing on these areas of need in Johnston County, the JCAP seeks to develop partnerships in other career areas such as HVAC, welding, machining and other high-demand occupations.”
“We are proud to partner with Johnston Community College to connect students with apprenticeship and workforce training opportunities,” said Marty Clayton, district manager, Duke Energy. “These students will help meet the growing and evolving needs of the region’s manufacturing industry.”
This grant is part of Duke Energy’s $35 million investment in North Carolina’s Community Colleges’ focus on technical education and support of business and industry. Individual community colleges could apply for funds through the North Carolina Community Foundation and the Foundation for the Carolinas. Applications were reviewed by a committee of representatives from Duke Energy, NC Community College System and NC Department of Commerce.
