Dr. Johnson’s Statement on the Derek Chauvin Trial

Published: 04/28/2021

At JCC, we stand with all those who seek equity in our country, in our community, and on our college campus.

Over the past year, the world has watched in horror the death of George Floyd. On Tuesday the world watched again as guilty verdicts on all three charges against Derek Chauvin were read.

We know these verdicts will not eliminate the pain of this tragedy.  In fact, they may not be reflective of justice for all.  They do, however, assign accountability for Mr. Floyd’s death and in doing so, tip the scales toward future accountability as we move toward increased social justice.

At JCC, we stand with all those who seek equity in our country, in our community, and on our college campus.

We are committed to the continued development of an environment which supports social justice and space for engaged discourse and spirited decision-making enriched with diversity of thought and people.

We are steadfast in our efforts to develop relationships with partners who are working alongside us to ensure mutual attainment of goals related to equity, diversity and inclusion.

We strive for real cultural transformation and systemic change in our students’ learning, our students’ personal and professional development into socially responsible leaders, our interpersonal and collegiate relations, our institutional achievements, and for the greater communities we touch.

We are One College with Endless Opportunities, holding a deep commitment to cultural diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging for all.
