JCC Medical Office Instructor Receives Technology Grant

Tiffany Ruiz, a medical office administration instructor at Johnston Community College, has received a classroom technology grant from Wake Electric Membership Corporation.

The grant in the amount of $1,065 will support the purchase of a smart, 180-degree plug and play Jabra PanaCast camera, which will allow online students to virtually join seat classes at least once a week.

“Online and seated students will be able to learn from each other in a classroom environment, which is often lost on students who only take online courses,” Ruiz said. “The Jabra PanaCast camera will allow for students to get the same learning experience whether they join during class where they can ask questions live or watch the posted cast from earlier that day. This will help us support students in new and diverse ways.”

Ruiz was one of nine educators in North Carolina and the only from a community college to receive funding for the 2019-20 academic year. The Classroom Technology awards grant applicants from North Carolina public school teachers serving grades K-12 and community colleges.

The funds for the Classroom Technology grants come from Wake Electric Membership Corporation members who agree to round up their light bill to the nearest whole dollar through the Operation RoundUp program.

Wake Electric is a non-profit electric utility serving over 46,900 consumers in parts of Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Nash, Vance, and Wake counties.
