Machining Students Win Awards at State SkillsUSA

Two Johnston Community College machining students recently competed and won awards at the SkillsUSA state conference in Greensboro.
Matthew Carmody of Selma took first place in the CNC technician competition. He will represent JCC and North Carolina at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference June 25-29 in Louisville, Ky.
Joshua Murphy of Smithfield won second place in the CNC turning specialist competition.
“We are very proud of Joshua and Matthew,” said Dwight Barnes, machining instructor. “They are prime examples of the level of skill that can be achieved from our machining program.”
By reaching the national competition, each winner has claimed their spot in the top 3 percent of all students in their trade area. In Louisville, they will be competing against the best from every state in the country to become the Champion of their trade. The National Leadership and Skills Conference is a $35 million event that is supported by over 1,100 business and industry partners who recognize that SkillsUSA members not only possess top-level technical skills, but the employability and leadership skills that will make them the future leaders of the workforce.
SkillsUSA (formerly known as Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) is a national, non-profit, career and technical student organization with over 300,000 members nationwide. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure that America has a skilled work force.
