College Recognizes High School Equivalency and Curriculum Certificate Completers

In 2015-16, 150 students earned their high school equivalency diploma.
Johnston Community College hosted a summer commencement ceremony Aug. 11 for students who earned high school equivalency diplomas this year. Also, students who earned curriculum program certificates were recognized at the 7 p.m. ceremony on the main campus in Smithfield.
In 2015-16, 128 students earned their high school equivalency diploma from the main campus and an additional 22 were awarded at Johnston Correctional Institute. A total of 147 curriculum certificates were awarded.
Mario Hobbs, a true JCC success story, was the guest speaker. Hobbs of Selma is a 2010 JCC adult high school graduate who has continued his education and now holds two associate degrees from JCC. He was active in TRIO, SGA, National Society of Leadership and Success, and Phi Theta Kappa. He begins his bachelor's degree studies at East Carolina University this month.
Hobbs encouraged students to be lifelong learners and earn a college degree.
"Don't stop here," Hobbs said. "I dare you to continue your education either at a two-year or four-year instituion by taking advantage of the endless oportunities that colleges have for you. Don't only become an average student who attends classes and goes home but become inolved in student activities or employment opportunities."
