Summer Camps Kick Off This Week

Camps focus on forensics and health careers.

Summer is officially here and that means summer camps are in full swing at Johnston Community College.

Classrooms and labs were busy this week with middle and high school students learning about forensic science and health care careers.

Fifteen middle-schoolers explored the world of crime scene investigation during the Bad to the Bones camp held in the Public Safety Services Building. Students made DNA double helix strands using candy and learned about facial reconstruction by creating a skull with molding clay. They also experimented with footwear impressions, fingerprinting, and a mock crime scene investigation.

 Also on Tuesday and Wednesday, some 30 high school students from took part in the Health Sciences Boot Camp. Students participated in hands-on activities in sonography, radiography, nuclear medicine, nursing, bioprocessing, pharmacy technology, medical assisting, therapeutic massage, and nursing assistant.

Michelle Cottle, a rising sophomore at Cleveland High, said she enjoyed the opportunity to explore a variety of careers in the health-care field.

"Radiography was really cool," Cottle said. "It was neat to see the human body in an X-ray."

Later in July, JCC is holding its Chef in Training and STEM camps.
