Students at Johnston Community College were recently recognized for their outstanding poetry and prose writing in the Cynthia DeFord Adams literary contest and their creative videos in the College's Quality Enhancement Plan or QEP video contest.

Antonio Ceras-Lucas of Willow Springs was the grand prize winner for his prose entry, "Welcome Brother Wolf."

In the prose category, April Baker of Four Oaks won first place, Madison Barbour of Angier won second place, and Alexa Lane of Clayton won third place. In the poetry category, Deborah McBride of Durham won first place, Dalton Creech of Smithfield won second place, and Christina Ellis of Kenly won third place. Honorable mentions were Michelle Perry, Dawn Simone, Yelitza Maldonado, and Hunter Summey.

Ceras-Lucas received an iPad and a cash prize for his grand prize writing. All other winners received cash prizes generated from the Cynthia DeFord Adams scholarship endowment managed through the JCC Foundation.

He is transferring to The University of North Carolina at Wilmington after graduating from JCC this month. "I was so surprised to win, and I'm so grateful and thankful for the instructors for teaching me so much," he said.

In the video contest, Dawn Simone of Wendell won first place and received an iPad. Noe Duran of Clayton placed second and received an iPad mini. The upbeat, 1 to 3 minute videos were student-produced and illustrated how the student's writing has improved while at JCC.

The outstanding student writers represent a range of programs of study including associate in arts, associate in science, nursing, radiography, cardiac sonography, medical office administration, and massage therapy.
