STEM Events Foster Better Understanding of Science and Math

Activities promote critical thinking, careers in science and math

The Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Center at Johnston Community College has been actively reaching out to students with helpful workshops and information this fall.

Students participated in two different presentations by faculty that taught them how to critically think in science and the latest scientific technologies. In October, scientists Kristin Brickman, a project engineer with CH2M Hill; Carla Spears, a research associate with Arbovax, Inc.; and Deke Yeargin, an engineering supervisor at Caterpillar's Clayton Machine Development Center, participated in a STEM career panel forum where they presented some of the newest STEM careers.

The JCC STEM Center supports teaching, learning, and exposure to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to any and all students who wish to succeed in STEM classes and careers.

"All of these events were excellent opportunities for our students to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and math," said Nahel Awadallah, director of programs for STEM, natural sciences, physical education, and health. "These activities are examples of how JCC is reaching out to ensure students are successful in their science and math classes, and we look forward to more fun and informative events in the future."
