It is essential to understand that meeting the program's educational criteria might not be the sole requirement for licensure. Additional prerequisites might include being listed on a registry, passing background checks, or satisfying certain physical standards. Therefore, students should consult the relevant agency to ascertain the full spectrum of requirements beyond educational accomplishments.

Graduates of accredited sonography programs may be eligible to take examinations in ultrasound physics and instrumentation and specialty examinations administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography® (ARDMS®) is an independent, non-profit organization that administers examinations and awards credentials in areas of ultrasound. The American Registry for Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is another. The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) is one of the biggest proponents of a nationwide licensure standard for medical sonographers.

Currently, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Oregon are the only states with approved legislation mandating the licensure of sonographers. It is suggested a student check with the state in question before taking the program
