Graduates of Johnston Community College’s Cosmetology Program meet the educational requirements to take the state licensure examination offered by the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners. This training requires 1500 hours of instruction in addition to successful completion of a variety of skilled performances. While licenses can generally transfer to other states under various reciprocity requirements, some states with other minimum hour requirements may require additional education and/or qualifying work experience beyond the requirements in North Carolina. Student hours typically can transfer to other states, however the individual schools typically make the determination on whether all or a portion of the students hours obtained in a NC approved school can transfer to their school. Some states still require their state exam for reciprocity, so it is suggested a student check with the state in question before taking the program.
