Day 1: Monday, April 13th

Introduction to Howell Woods

10:00 – 10:30 Snack

10:30 – 12:00 Ropes Course
The low ropes course is designed to focus on leadership skills.  Developing them from a basic level and building onto that.

Activity: It incorporates teamwork, strength, communication, and quick thinking to our campers.

12:00pm – 1:00 LUNCH BREAK!

Your child will have an hour to eat, but most children will only need 30 minutes; therefore there will be extra time for free time.

1:00 – 3:00 Nature Exploration
Campers will have a chance to explore what Howell Woods has to offer in this introductory session.

Activity: Campers will use a nature journal to document what they see, hear and smell.  They will also get to create their Nature Name, both crafts will be used throughout the week.

3:00 – 3:30 Snack

10:30 – 12:00 Signs of Wildlife
We will discuss what native animals leave behind (tracks, scat, fur, etc.) and set out to find certain tracks along our trails.

Activity: Campers will take home a plaster foot print mold of their favorite Howell Woods animal.

12:00pm – 1:00 LUNCH BREAK!

1:00 – 3:00 Tree ID
Campers will learn how to identify many of the trees and plants in our area by growth, habit, form, bark, and leaf shapes.

Activity: Campers will get to make their own Tree Faces and use an i-dial to identify common tree species.  Leaf rubbings will also be encouraged to make in their nature journals.

10:30 – 12:00 Radical Reptiles
Campers will get to meet the animals in our exhibit hall, including snakes and turtles, oh my!  They will learn about reptile adaptations, similarities and differences, and why they are essential in NC ecosystems.

Activity: Campers will get to create their own box turtle to take home!

12:00pm – 1:00 LUNCH BREAK!

1:00 – 3:00 Birds of Prey
An in-class session on birds of prey that will cover history, anatomy, life cycle, diet, native species, and why they are important to us.  Visit Howell Woods live exhibits.

Activity: We will dissect owl pellets to better understand their digestive system.  A short riding tour to search and identify birds of prey on the property.

Learn the basic concepts of using a map and compass to find your way through the wilderness.
Activity: Put your skills to the test on the Howell Woods orienteering course.

1:00 – 3:00 Insect Investigators
Campers will learn more about insects and pollinators by going through their life cycle, identifying common species, and visiting the Howell Woods Pollinator Garden.

Activity: Campers will have a chance to Build-A-Bug AND make their own insect hotels to take home!

We will go over what citizen science is, how to get involved with various projects, and more!

Activity: Campers will participate in a Spring Break Camp Bioblitz, documenting any and all flora and fauna at Howell Woods!

1:00 – 3:00 Nature PlaySpace
Campers will get to interact in our newest exhibit, the Nature PlaySpace.  Getting into the digging pit, sliding down our slide, and more!

Activity: Campers will get to contribute to our Nature PlaySpace by either rock painting or creating their own nature weaving craft!
