Johnston Community College offers fun Community Program courses for individuals - 16 years of age and older - who are seeking personal enrichment opportunities.
Course offerings are designed to meet the wants and needs of the community, and the list continues to grow.

Find Your Next Learning Opportunity:
In order to be tested and become a certified beekeeper, you must:
- Be a current North Carolina State Beekeepers Association (NCSBA) member.
- Pass a written test, which is administered through a local NCSBA chapter or given at one of the statewide conferences or testing events.
- Pass a practical test administered by a Certified Level Beekeeper or higher, as presented in the “Practical Examination” form. A minimum of four months beekeeping experience is needed prior to taking practical test.
- The Practical test will only be valid if given after the candidate successfully passes the Certified Level written exam.
Learn how to bake and decorate a delicious cake from scratch! Students will participate in live demonstrations and hands-on learning, learn how to follow a basic recipe to bake a cake from scratch, and learn the basic techniques of cake decorating using buttercream icing.
Requirements for each class: Participants are required to review the Cooking Class Safety and Sanitation Guidelines (PDF) prior to the start of class and adhere to the guidelines during classes.
Cooking classes are designed to appeal to a wide range of participants, from beginners looking to build basic kitchen skills, couples date night, to seasoned home cooks wanting to refine their techniques.

Class objectives include:
- Framing artworks utilizing readymade frames, which are premade frames that can be purchased from a store, or online.
- Measuring artwork and hand-cutting mats.
- Choosing mat colors, and how to design a framed artwork.
- Cutting and handling glass.
- Fitting, closing, and wiring framed artwork to create a finished ready-to-hang piece.
Vegetables
This 6-week course encompasses the basics of vegetable gardening. Areas of subject include soils, vegetables, weeding, common pests, and common diseases. This class has a mixture of hands-on work as well as class work.
Objectives:
Students will receive a basic understanding of vegetable gardening, and starting a vegetable garden at the JCC Arboretum.
Acrylic Painting Strategies
The course is designed for the beginner and no prior experience in painting or drawing is necessary.
- Learning elements and principles of design.
- Utilize color theory to unify a painting.
- Plan a composition strategy.
- Practice brushstroke techniques to create the best representation of all parts of the painting.
- Learn to modify a photograph to maximize the visual impact of the resulting piece of art.
- Decide when to call a painting "DONE!"
Participants will learn how to prepare French-method Macarons. Participants will also learn how to properly set-up and sanitize their workstations and use a digital food scale for prepping their formulas. Please be prepared for a fully immersive, hands on & action-packed day of baking fun!
Royal Icing Cookies
Participants will learn how to make assorted custom decorated Easter-themed royal icing sugar cookies by preparing a creaming method sugar cookie dough and royal icing, and how to decoratively finish their baked cookies! Participants will also learn how to properly set-up and sanitize their workstations and use a digital food scale for prepping their formulas. Please be prepared for a fully immersive, hands on & action-packed day of baking fun!

Unless otherwise noted, classes are held at the JCC Arboretum.
In this 6-week beginner sewing class, participants will learn the basics of a life skill that can be used for themselves or professionally. Students will learn how to use a sewing machine, identify the purpose of tools used in sewing, how to read a pattern, sewing terminology and construction of projects such as an apron, pot holders, pillow covers, placemats and pajama pants.
Class objectives include:
- Identify and understand the parts of a sewing machine.
- Describe the basics of sewing as well as sewing terms.
- Know the use of sewing tools.
- Demonstrate proper pattern layout.
- Create a variety of sewing projects
People who can hear are often unaware of the communication gap encountered by the deaf. Help close the gap by learning sign language!
This class is designed to teach entry-level sign language skills. Students should
learn to communicate basic sign language with family members and friends. (Instructor
is not ASL certified).
Intro to Basic Sign Language II
This class is designed to enhance your skills by building on the foundational vocabulary,
phrases, and sentences covered in the introductory sign language course. Students
will learn new vocabulary and continue practice sentences. (Instructor is not ASL
certified).
Students will receive the ServSafe certification, a nationally recognized certification
in food handling, upon completion of the course.

Required Book: ServSafe Manager 7.0 with Answer Sheet available at JCC Bookstore. Purchase your
book before the first class session to bring with you to both class sessions.
