LASER Lab Speech Competition Frequently Asked Questions:

What is appropriate attire for the qualifying round and for the final speech competition?
For the qualifying round, students are welcome to wear appropriate, casual attire (jeans and t-shirts are fine). For the final speech competition, students are required to dress in business casual attire (no jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, or flip flops). If you have further questions about business casual attire, we would encourage you to contact us or visit JCC’s Career Center.

Where are the rules for the LASER Lab Speech Competition?
The official rules for the LASER Lab Speech Competition are located on JCC’s LASER Lab website. 

How do I sign up to audition?
Sign-ups take place through Appointment Plus. Auditions will take place on Tuesday, January 22nd from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. and from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. and on Wednesday, January 23rd from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Auditions will be held in the LASER Lab

Can I bring friends/family to the audition?
The auditions are closed to the public. If you are not auditioning, you are not allowed to enter the audition space. Friends and family are more than welcome to attend the final event on Tuesday, February 12th.

Can I use notes to present my speech?
If you would like, you are welcome to have note cards or a printed manuscript when you are speaking. However, contestants are not allowed to use smartphones, laptops, or other digital devices as notes without appropriate documentation from JCC's Disability Services.

How/when will I be notified if I made it to the next round?
You will be notified of your competition status via email no later than by close of business on Thursday, January 24th.

How will the speaking order be decided for the final competition?
Each finalist will be entered in a list on random.org. The randomized list generated will determine the speaking order for the competition.
