JCC Engineering Leading the Way Since 2015

Since the launch of the Associate in Engineering (AE) degree program in 2015, Johnston Community College has been a proud partner with local businesses and community members to provide a rich engineering experience for its students. From steadily-increasing overall enrollment to a larger representation of non-traditional, minority, and female students, the program has proven to be an ongoing success. Approximately 75% of AE graduates are accepted to an engineering school when they transfer from JCC, while just over 12% of those graduates are awarded the prestigious Goodnight Scholarship at North Carolina State University.

Programming options continue to expand at a rapid pace; the AE program now offers less math-intensive engineering-focused pathways, a dual-enrollment pathway, a computer programming certificate, and a transfer articulation agreement with Sweet Briar College in Virginia. In 2020, JCC launched the STEM pathway at the Early College Academy and the new Mechanical Engineering Technology program. Outside of the classroom, AE students can assist with JoCo Robos, a five-year-old all-county robotics team that participates each year in the NC FIRST Robotics Competition.

Each of the initiatives that the Associate in Engineering program fosters has one ultimate goal: giving our students every skill and tool necessary to meet the future demands of the STEM workforce.
