Teacher Assistant Education
Johnston Community College, in cooperation with the Johnston County Board of Education, offers a certificate program for those currently employed by JCS and those who would like to pursue a career as a Teacher Assistant. Three plans are designed to qualify persons to receive this certificate.
Plan A consists of 198 contact hours in specific non-credit continuing education courses in the area of WorkKeys® mathematics/ reading/writing, technology/computer courses, conversational Spanish, first aid and safety, or early childhood development.
Plan B consists of 18 semester credit hours completed in the Associate in Arts or Associate in Sciences programs.
Plan C consists of 13 semester credit hours completed in the Early Childhood Certificate Program.
Upon completion of any of these options, it is the responsibility of the teacher assistant to notify the Continuing Education Division at Johnston Community College to receive a certificate verifying their completion. This certificate may then be taken to the Personnel Office at the Board of Education for the pay increment to be processed.
The following classes are designed to fulfill Plan A requirement of the Johnston County Board of Education for the job of Teacher Assistant. The courses focus on the concepts of becoming an effective Teacher’s Aide studying subjects such as classroom management, discipline, EC issues and laws, computers, and more. The classes also teach the skills necessary to take the WorkKeys assessment tests of Reading for Information, Locating Information, Applied Mathematics, and Writing, and thus receive a North Carolina Career Readiness Certificate. Upon completion of the 96 hours of coursework and the WorkKeys assessments, candidates will be considered “highly qualified” and employable by Johnston County Schools, and when candidates finish the remaining 102 hours of coursework, they are eligible for an increase in pay.
