Testing Services

During your time at Johnston Community College, you may have the opportunity to take advantage of a variety of testing services. While some of our tests are used in the admissions process, others are designed to assess your academic ability before entering a program of study. Testing serves as an integral part of one’s academic career and we are pleased to offer these services to our students.

Tests we offer include:

ACCUPLACER

The ACCUPLACER is a 3-4 part free computerized assessment used as part of the admissions process for placement purposes. A letter or email with an assigned testing date is sent only after all application materials and transcripts have been received.

The ACCUPLACER can accurately assess your level of readiness for college level math and English coursework. The assessment covers Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills (English), Elementary Algebra, and Arithmetic. A report containing your results is available after testing and interpretation of your results is completed during your admissions interview.

The following websites may help students review important concepts presented on the ACCUPLACER:

www.math.com
www.grammarbook.com
www.testprepreview.com
www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/accuplacer

For additional assistance, visit the Academic Skills Center in room 187 of the Wilson Building.

HOBET

The HOBET (Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test) is an assessment used as part of the admissions process for Nursing, Radiography, Medical Sonography, Cardiovascular Sonography, and Nuclear Medicine. The computerized assessment contains seven parts including math, reading, and written English expression sections, takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete, and can only be taken once per academic year. The individual sections and timing allowances are as follows:

Students are scheduled for the HOBET only after the Allied Health program specific application has been submitted and all program admissions requirements have been met. There is a fee to take this assessment.

A HOBET study guide is available from the JCC Bookstore or from the test publishers at www.eriworld.com. A skills review program is offered during the year through the Academic Skills Center. Students may also wish to visit www.testprepreview.com for additional study resources.
