In recent years Johnston County and surrounding counties have seen a decline in many of its traditional employment fields. The changes experienced in the tobacco industry have reduced tobacco-related employment in the county impacting farm workers, tobacco-related manufacturers, local businesses, and the communities which have depended on the income derived from tobacco production survival. The closing of industries and distribution centers such as K.R. Edwards Leaf Tobacco Company and the reduction in the number of tobacco farm operations has affected many people in the county. To support the training needs of individuals and their families displaced by the changing tobacco industry, Johnston Community College has implemented this comprehensive career training program. Funding for Project Skill-UP is provided through a grant from The North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission to the NC Community College System. A Project Skill–UP training plan may include:
- Career Counseling
- Skills Assessment
- Employability Training
- Short-Term Occupational Skills Training
- Student Financial Assistance
