Nursing Assistant I Certification Course

Nursing Assistant Level I provides basic personal care training for nurse aides seeking employment in hospitals, nursing homes, doctor’s offices and home health agencies. This 160-hour course prepares the nurse aide to take the Certification Exam given by Pearsonvue. The class involves classroom, laboratory practice, and clinical experiences. Classes begin quarterly (Jan/April/Sept). Course times offered are:

  • Days meet M/T/TH (8:30AM-1:00PM) for 3 months.
  • Days W/F (8:00AM-5:00PM/8:00AM-1:00PM) for 3 months.
  • Evenings (5:30PM-10:00PM) with a few Saturdays (8:00AM-5:00PM) for 4 months.
  • Every Saturday 8:00AM-5:00PM/Every Sunday 2:00-6:00PM (some 8:00AM to 12noon) for 5 months.

Day classes will last 12 weeks and the Evenings and Weekend classes last 16 weeks. Upon completion of the class, students will apply to take the State Written and Hands-On Nurse Aide Competency Exam. Upon passing the Exam, the nurse aide will be placed on the N.C. Nurse Aide Registry. Contact Nurse Aide Coordinator at (919) 209-2009 to place your name, address, and phone number on the next available waiting list for the schedule selected. Nurse Aide packets will be mailed to you prior once a seat is available. Costs: Tuition: $199, Books: $60, Criminal Background $5/$25 fee, + uniform. At the completion of the program, student will be provided a certificate, a testing handbook, and an application to mail with a required fee of $92 for the Certification Exam.

PRE-REQUISITES : 1) A current CPR card. (Pre-register with the Continuing Education Registrar in the Elsee Building on campus or call (919) 209-2168 about CPR cost and registration requirements. See “Health and Emergency Services” section for further CPR course description.). 2) Copy of High School Diploma, GED, or Transcript of Graduation with date, If not, the TABE Reading Test will be required. (See Reading Assessment Evaluator located in Continuing Education, the Elsee Building, to take the free exam for Nurse Aide (Contact Lanetta at 209-2054 for Reading Test dates/times). Student must pass with a minimum of an eighth grade reading level to take the Nurse Aide Course); and 3) Sign a Consent Form at time of Orientation/Registration to have a Criminal Background performed prior to Clinical Rotation. Students in High School must complete a Duall Enrollment Form signed by their principal before registering.

Nurse Aide Refresher Course:

The 30-hour Nurse Aide Refresher provides review and hands-on skills practice for those students with expired nurse aide certifications less than 5 years, and out-of-state nurse aides desiring to be listed on the N.C. Nurse Aide Registry. The course is taught during the day on 3 ½ Saturdays in the Spring/Fall. Requirements: 1) Copy of driver’s license; 2) Copy of Social Security Card; and 3) Copy of previous Nurse Aide listing or copy of certificate of previous Nurse Aide Training. This class is not designed to teach the entire Nurse Aide Level I Course but a review of previously learned skills and prepare for the Nurse Aide Certification Exam. Costs: Tuition $120, Skills Packet approx. $10 (JCC Bookstore). Students are to contact Nurse Aide Coordinator (919) 209-2009 to place your name, address, and number on the next class waiting list. A registration packet will be mailed to you requesting required documents. Classes are taught over four Saturdays 8:30AM-5:00PM. Contact Coordinator at (919) 209-2009 to be placed on waiting list to receive packet. Classes will begin in January, Dates TBA and are based needs and waiting list. Out of state Nurse Aides desiring to only challenge the N.C. Nurse Aide Competency Exam should go to website: www.ncnar.org and click on Pearsonvue Testing, then click on Nurse Aide Exam for Application, Testing handbook, Testing sites, and Practice exam.

Nursing Assistant II Certification Course

This 160-hour course meets the requirements of the N. C. Board of Nursing for listing on the Nurse Aide II Registry. Students will learn sterile techniques with wound care, tracheostomy care, catheter care, diabetic testing, oxygen therapy, and nutrition.

Requirements are: 1) Current, active Nurse Aide Level I listing in North Carolina; 2) a current CPR card; 3) copy of High School Diploma or GED; and 4) Sign a Consent Form at the time of Orientation/Registration for Criminal Background cost $5 or $25. Clean Record Required. Tuition: $199, Books $65 plus uniform. Day Class times are 8AM-5:00PM two days a week Tues/Thurs; Contact Nurse Aide Coordinator (919) 209-2009 to place your name, address, and number on waiting list for the next available class schedule. A packet will be mailed to you when a seat is available.

Medication Aide Certification Course

This 24-hour course meets the requirements of the N. C. Board of Nursing. The course involves class and lab practice involving the Five rights of medication Administration, accuracy, infection control, privacy, patient rights, and scope of practice. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to make application (fee required) to take the Medication Aide Certification Exam and be listed on the N. C. Board of Nursing Medication Aide Registry. Students will be able to administer medications in a Skilled Nursing Home. (This is not the same a Medication Tech). Classes are taught Evenings (Mon/Wed) or (Tues/Thurs) 5:30PM-9:30PM; also on three Saturdays in August (8:00-5:00PM). Dates TBA. REQUIREMENTS: 1) Copy of High School Diploma or GED; 2) Driver’s License; and Social Security Card. Tuition: $65 and Book $10 (JCC Bookstore located in the Wilson Building). Contact Nurse Aide Coordinator (919) 209-2009 to place name, address, and phone number and schedule desired on waiting list for the next available class.

Medication Aide – RN Instructor Course

This 16-hour course meets the requirements of the N. C. Board of Nursing. The class is taught by a certified Master Medication Aide Instructor. The class is taught on a Thursday/Friday 8:00AM to 4:30PM. Cost: Tuition $65. Information for Instructor’s Manual with CD, Student Book, and teaching Tool Box with DVD - Contact JCC Bookstore for costs and ordering at (919) 209-2225. Contact Nurse Aide/Medication Aide Coordinator at (919) 209-2009 to place your name on the next available class list. A registration packet will be mailed to you requesting required information for the class.

REQUIREMENTS: 1) Copy of Driver’s License; 2) Copy of Social Security Card; 3) Completed N. C. Board of Nursing Application 3) Hold current, active, unrestricted N.C. RN or compact State License; 2) Have 2 years current experience with medication administration. After completion of the course, the RN must apply to the Board of Nursing with fee for certification approval as a Medication Aide Instructor. Renewal is every two years through proof of teaching the medication aide course in the past two years. Classes are offered twice a year and based on waiting list need.

Mammography Certification Initial Training

This 30.5-hour program is the Initial Training required for Radiology Tech desiring to administer Mammograms. Classes are held on campus (one to two times a year based on need) in the Radiology Department in the Health Science Building on two consecutive Saturdays and Sundays (8:30AM-4:30PM). Upon completion of the program, students will perform the required 100 Mammograms with their employer required to apply for the Certification Exam. The course is approved through the AART.

REQUIREMENTS: 1) Driver’s License; 2) Copy of Radiology Training certificate; and 3) Tuition of $120 with registration form. Purchase Mammography Book from JCC Bookstore, Continuing Education shelf, or call bookstore for cost at 919- 209-2225. Contact Coordinator at (919) 209-2009 to place your name, address, and phone number on the next available class list. Student will be mailed a packet for the required documents to register for the class. Dates/times TBA. The student must be ARRT certified by providing a copy of their ARRT card.

Requirements: Copy of Radiology Technology certification or letter of recommendation from the College completing the Radiology Program; and a copy of driver's license.

Tanning Bed Operator Certification

This 8-hour class is required to run your own tanning bed business. A Safety Consultant will provide the student with the knowledge and training to run a safe and successful tanning salon. Class is held in the Public Safety Services Building on the college campus. REQUIREMENTS: 1) copy of driver’s license; 2) Tuition Fee: $65 with registration form.
