Three-semester program trains Spanish-speaking students cosmetology skills.
Johnston Community College is now registering students for its new cosmetology Spanish program, which will begin in January.
The three-semester continuing education program is designed to teach Spanish-speaking students the skills they need to work in a professional salon. The program will be taught by both Spanish-speaking and English-speaking instructors.
"We decided to begin a cosmetology Spanish program here at JCC because we recognized a need in the Hispanic community for students who are not fluent in English to have an opportunity available to them in Spanish," said Jennifer Wells, director of cosmetology programs at JCC. "It is a part of the college's mission to meet workforce and community needs and it is our desire to reach out, identify the needs and try to execute a plan to meet those needs."
Beginning Jan. 12, the program will meet Thursday and Fridays from 3:30 until 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Graduates of the program will be skilled in hairstyling, haircutting, sculptured nail technology, skin care, permanent wave and relaxing, and hair color. After students pass the state board exam, they are qualified to work in cosmetology salons and related businesses in North Carolina.
The program is estimated to cost about $1,900. Students may qualify for financial aid or scholarship opportunities.
JCC also offers an associate's degree, diploma, and instructor certificate as well as numerous continuing education courses in cosmetology.
