Network+ and Security+: (102hrs)
This class combines the CompTIA Security+ and Network+. The course is designed to cover topics necessary to build a network from the ground up, including fundamentals, the OSI model, basic LAN, Ethernet, NIC’s, cabling, Protocols, Network Operating Systems, Remote Connectivity, protecting, and interconnecting other Network Operating Systems, and provide the student with a fundamental understanding of network security principles and implementation. You will learn about the technologies used and principles involved in creating a secure computer networking environment. You will learn about the authentication, the types of attacks and malicious code that may be used against your network, the threats and countermeasures for e-mail, Web applications, remote access, and file and print services. A variety of security topologies are discussed as well as technologies and concepts used for providing secure communications channels, secure internetworking devices, and network medium. Further, you will learn about intrusion detection systems, firewalls, and physical security concepts. In addition, security policies, disaster recovery, and computer forensics are covered. Aside from learning the technologies involved in security, you will get to understand the daily tasks involved with managing and troubleshooting those technologies.

The CompTIA A+ Essentials validates knowledge of computer hardware and software. IT Technician validates computer repair issues in conjunction with the CompTIA A+ Essentials. The Remote Support Technician validates client interaction, client training, and operating system and connectivity issues. The Depot Technician validates hardware related activities. PC Support Technician: CompTIA: A+ (132 hrs)
The latest version of CompTIA A+ is CompTIA A+ 2009 Edition. Two exams are necessary to be certified: CompTIA A+ Essentials, exam code 220-701; and CompTIA A+ Practical Application, exam code 220-702.
CompTIA A+ Essentials measures the necessary competencies of an entry-level IT professional with a recommended 500 hours of hands-on experience in the lab or field. It tests for the fundamentals of computer technology, networking and security, as well as the communication skills and professionalism now required of all entry-level IT professionals.
CompTIA A+ Practical Application is an extension of the knowledge and skills identified in CompTIA A+ Essentials, with more of a “hands-on” orientation focused on scenarios in which troubleshooting and tools must be applied to resolve problems.Course Code: ELN 3006 01F

PC Troubleshooting (24 hrs)
Students will learn how to keep PCs running at their full potential, keep the hard drive cleaned of unnecessary files, diagnose and repair common problems, keep windows updated to avoid security problems, keep PCs from viruses and other malware and how to backup important data. Students will take a look inside the PC and learn to identify the major components and perform common upgrades such as adding memory or a second hard drive. This course is an excellent pre-course to the A+ certification prep courses for entry level computer technician positions.

Open Lab for IT Students
Lab A166 will an open lab starting May 21 – Aug. 13 for registered IT Academy students only-- beginning Monday – Thursday from 1-5 and Wednesdays from 1-5 and 6-9 p.m. The lab will be closed July 6-9.
