Students of Johnston Community College typically spend anywhere from $500 to $1,000 per semester for books. Many students who are not eligible for federal aid must bear the out-of-pocket expenses.
To address this problem, the Board of Directors of the Johnston Community College Foundation hosted the inaugural Dollars for Books gala in the fall of 2005 at a private residence. Proceeds from the gala provided funds for students to secure loans for books and supplies.
Due to the pressing need for further financial help for many students who want an education, and given the escalating costs of books, the Foundation Board of Directors hosts the fundraiser special event on a yearly basis.
Three such Dollars for Books gala events have been held to date, with over $25,000 raised. As of fall 2007, over $32,000 has been awarded to students through this Foundation program.
The loans are awarded as revolving accounts, with loan collections being available to be re-loaned to students each semester. All loans have a specified repayment date.
The 2008 Dollars for Books gala will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2008.
Information is available for students who are interested in Emergency Loans for Books or they can call the Financial Aid office at 919-209-2036.
