The EMS education program offers courses designed to improve emergency health care to the public and serves as the American Heart Association Community Training Center. The program offers courses to all health care professionals current with the latest technology including:
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Provider and Instructor
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - Provider and Instructor
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) - Provider and Instructor
- Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) - Provider and Instructor levels
Certification courses include:
- EMT - Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic
- Continuing education courses consistent with NC State requirements for providers in Johnston County.
Johnston Community College 2010 EMT Basic Program
Orientation: Tuesday, January 12th, 2010 at 7:00 PM. Public Safety Services Building Auditorium
Course Information: National Standard Curriculum and North Carolina Office of EMS program guidelines.
- Classes Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00- 10:00 pm
- Clinical rotations with Emergency Medical Services and Hospital ED with flexible scheduling
- Saturday classes according to syllabus
- CPR, and NIMS certifications included
- Emergency Vehicle Driving certification is optional for a separate registration fee of $65 non-affiliated
Requirements:High School Diploma, GED or Dual Enrollment Form completed and signed by principal. Students must be 18 years of age prior to the end of class.
Registration is $175. Students are fee-exempt with a NC Fire/police/EMS affiliation letter on organization letterhead. Register at orientation.

Johnston Community College 2010 Paramedic Program
Orientation: Thursday, January 7th, 2010 at 08:30- 17:30. Public Safety Services Building Auditorium
Course Information: This year- long EMT Basic to Paramedic Program is offered on a shift friendly schedule.
- One class per week: Monday or Thursday; 8:30- 5:30 pm
- Average of one clinical shift per week with flexible scheduling
- 11 weekend classes
- PHTLS, ACLS, PALS, PEPP, AMLS, NIMS certifications included
- EMS 3000 Anatomy and Physiology offered on-line as a co-requisite
- Graduation is December 17, 2010
Requirements:North Carolina EMT Basic or Intermediate, High School Diploma or GED

Bridge to Paramedic:
Registered Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, and Military medics can complete the Paramedic course through advanced placement based on experience and education. See website for brochure, or Contact Leah Garner (919) 209-2086 for RN/RT, Mick Stewart (919) 209-2183 for military.
Other courses offered in this program include:
National Registry Refresher
EMS Education offers continuing education courses that are consistent with National Registry requirements for both National Registry Paramedic recertification and exam preparation. These classes are offered on an annual basis.
Educational Methodology
Educational Methodology is offered twice per year. This course meets the established guidelines for DOI Fire Instructor and NCOEMS Level I and II Instructor. Classes are offered on a shift friendly schedule, 8:30- 5:30 twice per week. Attendance of one class per week is required.
Instructor Updates, Training Officers, and Preceptor Course
Continuing Education for credentialed instructors is offered periodically. Instructor updates are consistent with NCOEMS requirements.
Training Officer courses for both BLS level program (fire departments) and ALS level programs (EMS) through coordination with the EMS Education Director. Contact Susan Crisp at (919) 209-2135 or sscrisp@johnstoncc.edu.
Johnston County Preceptor courses are offered periodically or by request to the Director of EMS Education at (919) 209-2135, or sscrisp@johnstoncc.edu.
Certified Intensive Care Provider
This critical care certification if offered to Paramedics, Registered Nurses, Physician’s Assistants and Respiratory Therapists with at least one year of experience. Johnston Community College is a registered site with the Cleveland Clinical EMS Academy. Course requirements include and on-line pre-course, classroom sessions, and 36 hours of clinical in the critical care setting. Course completion allows student to sit for the FP-C exam. Both ground and air transport considerations for the critical care environment are addressed through active participation in lecture and skills based instruction. Course are offered twice each year.
