Continuing Education classes are taught in compliance with the Johnston County Emergency Services Plan and the North Carolina Office of EMS guidelines for re-credential. Classes are taught atJCC, Johnston County EMS Squads and Fire Departments according to the schedule posted below.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support
(ACLS) Initial Provider
ACLS is a two day, advanced, instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post-cardiac-arrest care. It also covers airway management and related pharmacology. In this course, skills are taught in large, group sessions and small, group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented.
Target Audience: ACLS is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, and paramedics, as well as others who need an ACLS course completion card for job or other requirements.
Prerequisite: Current Basic Life Support certification; Basic ECG Interpretation

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Instructor Course
The CPR Instructor course combines the Core Instructor Course and CPR teaching skills in a 2 day class format. The Core Instructor Course provides a foundation for teaching and facilitating American Heart Association courses in various areas of specialization (CPR, ACLS and PALS). Upon completion of this instructor course, the participant will be able to teach the Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Course and Heartsaver Classroom Courses which are designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals and the public with the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.
Target Audience: Individuals that have an interest in teaching and providing life saving techniques to healthcare providers and the community at large.
Prerequisite: Current American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider certification

Pediatric Advanced Life Support Initial Provider
This 2 day course uses a scenario-based, team approach to teach pediatric emergency respiratory management or cardiac arrest. The PALS course is for healthcare providers who initiate and direct advanced life support in pediatric emergencies. Recognition and treatment of infants and children at risk for cardio-pulmonary arrest utilizing a systematic approach to pediatric assessment is the focus of this course.
Target Audience: The primary target audience for this course is pediatricians, emergency physicians, family physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers who initiate and direct advanced life support in pediatric emergencies.
Prerequisite: Current BLS certification
