DSST
The DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST) is a paper/pencil exam that can be used to receive course credit. JCC students as well as the general public may take DSST exams in the Testing Center in room 186 of the Wilson Building. Advance registration is required.
Johnston Community College administers Dantes Standardized Subject Tests (DSST) once a month on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. The DSST is paper/pencil and takes about 90 minutes to complete.

JCC students who perform satisfactorily on the exam will receive a grade of X. The X grade carries no quality points, but credit hours will be awarded identical to the number normally assigned to that course at JCC. The appropriate department will determine the amount of credit awarded within a specific program. DSST policy is subject to change as necessary.

DSST credit must be approved by the college registrar prior to taking the test.
To secure a reservation for an exam date, send a DSST registration form and an administrative fee of $15 (payable to JCC) no later than two weeks prior to the test date to the following address:

On the day of testing, a $80 DSST examination fee is required. The fee can be paid via credit card or money order (payable to The Chauncey Group). No checks accepted.
DSST results are mailed to the student within four weeks of the exam date.
DSST regulations state that is a student does not successfully pass an exam, they must wait six months to retake the same exam.

DSST for Military Personnel
DSST exams and optional essays are free to all eligible military personnel with proper military ID; however, service members will still be required to pay JCC's administrative fee of $15.00.
DSST exams are funded by the U.S. government for the following:
- Military personnel (Active Duty and Reserve): Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, Army Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, Army and Air National Guard.
- Eligible civilian employees and spouses of participating Reserve Component and Coast Guard personnel.
- Department of Defense Acquisition Personnel (only eligible for the following computer-based exams: Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, and Principles of Marketing).
