Defensive Driving Programs


If you have been charged with a traffic violation, you may be eligible to take one of the Defensive Driving programs offered at Johnston Community College.

Four* defensive driving courses are offered:

* A non-citation Alive at 25 class is available for students 16-24 years of age. For information, click here.

These courses are offered by the Johnston County District Attorney's Office, Johnston Community College, and the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina.

4-hour (Green School)

If you have been charged with one of the traffic violations listed below, the 4-hour (Green School) Defensive Driving Program may minimize or prevent the assessment of insurance points or premium surcharges on your insurance policy and/or points on your driver's license.

  • Crossing median - 20-146
  • Driving left of center - 20-146
  • Failing to reduce speed - 20-141
  • Driving the wrong way on a dual lane - 20-165.1
  • Failing to signal when turning - 20-142 & 20-158.1
  • Failing to wear seat belt - 20-135.2A
  • Failing to yield - 20-155 & 20-258.1
  • Failing to yield pedestrian right of way - 20-173
  • Following too closely -  20-152
  • Impeding traffic - 20-141
  • Improper passing - 20-150
  • Improper turn - 20-153
  • Improper use of traffic lane - 20-146.2
  • Move Over Law - 20-157(f)
  • No operators license - 20-7(a)
  • Red light violation - 20-158
  • Speeding up to 20 mph over limit - 20-141
  • Speeding too fast for conditions - 20-141(a)
  • Stop sign violation - 20-158
  • Unsafe movement - 20-154

Alive at 25 (Yellow School)

If you have been charged with one of the traffic violations listed below, the Alive at 25 (Yellow School) Defensive Driving Program may prevent the assessment of insurance points or premium surcharges on your insurance policy and/or points on your driver's license.

You may be eligible for this program if you are 16 - 24 years old and if your traffic citation is for:

  • City code violations - 00-000
  • Crossing median - 20-146
  • Driving left of center - 20-146
  • Driving the wrong way on a dual lane - 20-165.1
  • Exceeding posted speed limits - 20-141
  • Failing to reduce speed - 20-141
  • Failing to signal when turning - 20-142 & 20-158.1
  • Failing to wear seat belt - 20-135.2A
  • Failing to yield - 20-155 & 20-258.1
  • Failing to yield pedestrian right of way - 20-173
  • Following too closely -  20-152
  • Improper passing - 20-150
  • Improper turn - 20-153
  • Improper use of traffic lane - 20-146.2
  • Red light violation - 20-158
  • Speed - less than posted minimum - 20-141
  • Speed zone 35 mph or less (up to 20 mph over limit) - 20-141
  • Speed zone 40 mph or more (up to 15 mph over limit) - 20-141
  • Speeding faster than reasonable - 20-141
  • Speeding too fast for conditions - 20-141
  • Stop sign violation - 20-158
  • Unsafe movement - 20-154

Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving 8-hour (Red School)

DDC-ADD is an 8-hour course that addresses the attitudes and behaviors of the negligent driver.  Interactive exercises, lectures, visuals, and thought provoking discussions are used to teach responsibility on the road.

You may be eligible for this program in your traffic citation is for:

  • Careless and reckless - 20-141.6
  • Passing a stopped school bus - 20-217
  • Speeding in a school zone - 20-141.1
  • Speeding in a work zone - 20-141 (j2)
  • Speeds in excess of 90 mph
  • Speeding more than 20 mph over posted speed limit

StreetSafe

If you have been charged with one of the following violations listed below, you may qualify for the StreetSafe Program. StreetSafe is made available to you by the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office, Johnston Community College, and the S Solutions Incorporated (SSI).

StreetSafe is a 4½ hour course that is taught by law enforcement and fire personnel. Under their supervision, students will witness and experience: Speed Control, Tailgating, Distractions, Alcohol Education, and Seatbelt Convincer. There will also be discussions for both young drivers and their parents with Court Officials.

The StreetSafe class must be completed within the time ordered by the court.
