Program History: CT/MRI Technology

In 1989, Fonda Worthington, the director of Radiologic Technology at Edgecombe Community College (ECC), surveyed local computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (CT/MRI) facilities and found that there was a great need for trained CT and MRI technologists.  She worked with Steve Jones, the manager of Nash Day Hospital, to develop a CT/MRI curriculum plan.  In 1990, the plan was submitted to the North Carolina Department of Community Colleges where it was approved.

The CT/MRI program at ECC, which started as a certificate program, was the first in the state and has been successfully graduating entry level CT/MRI technologists for the past ten years.

In 1994, Rick Mastman took over as CT/MRI program director.  In 1997, the program was changed from a certificate to a diploma program.

In July of 2000, ECC and Johnston Community College (JCC) began working together to form a CT/MRI consortium program that would allow ECC to offer CT/MRI courses at JCC.

In December of 2000, ECC and JCC were approved by the North Carolina Community College System to offer a CT/MRI consortium program -- the first CT/MRI consortium program in the state.  Classes were offered at both locations in July of 2001.

This collaborative agreement has allowed ECC to offer the CT/MRI program at the two campuses concurrently and to add a number of new excellent clinical affiliates.
