Basic Hair Color Theory (4 Hours)

This course is designed to assist North Carolina cosmetologists in acquiring the NC State required Continued Education hours.   Class Objective: Upon completion, the stylist will have a strong understanding of color theory and know how to use this knowledge to increase their color business.   Topics covered include: gray coverage, removing unwanted tones, consultation tips as well as how to promote color services for every client. NOTE: North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Art requires cosmetologist to complete 24 hours of continued education prior to license renewal.

Fearless Hair Color Correction (4 Hours)

This course is designed to assist North Carolina cosmetologists in acquiring the NC State required Continued Education hours.   Class Objective: Upon completion, the stylist will be able to approach any hair color correction situation with an easy step-by-step process. Topics covered include: removal of ash tones, neutralizing brassiness, removal of artificial dark tones, as well as easy steps to tint-back blonde hair to brunette.

Advanced Hair Color as a Specialty

How many of you would be interested in becoming a Master hair colorists? How many want to be recognized in your salon & community for your hair coloring skills? Would you be interested in becoming listed among the best hair colorists in the country and have clients seek you out for your services? If you are interested then you maybe a candidate to become board certified by the American Board of Certified Hair Colorists or at least have the knowledge to be the BEST YOU CAN BE!!!

This course has been designed to assist North Carolina Cosmetologists in acquiring the requirements for continued education hours. Upon completion of the course, you will have a strong understanding of the curriculum of “The American Board of Certified Haircolorists”. This course will give you the foundation and sound knowledge to help you in solving hair color problems. It will give you the vocabulary to dazzle your clients and help you become the hair color expert you always wanted to be. Classes do not need to be taken in sequence. Advanced Hair Color Day 1: (8 CE Hours)

Upon completion of Day 1, stylists will have an in-depth knowledge of hair color chemistry.
 -Topics that will be covered include: Over - highlighting, color build- up, how porosity affects hair color results, what’s in a bottle of hair color, how does H2O2 and alkali work in depositing hair color, the importance of the consultation, how to make recommendations, dealing with clients fears, handling unreasonable clients, hair color correction techniques, solving many hair color problems such as over-lightened hair, color build up, color removal problems, and when to say no.

Advanced Hair Color Day 2: (8 CE Hours)

Upon completion of Day 2, Stylists will have the practical application of color as designed by the ABCH national guidelines.
 -Stylists will be working on mannequins. The techniques are, weave /slice, highlight retouch, gray reduction, tone on tone, reverse highlight, high-low lighting and bleach retouch. The stylist will learn the proper mixing of product, the necessary tools needed to be best hair colorist they can be. The stylists will prepare the hair swatches for different effects and color development. The stylist will know how to maintain clients for a lifetime.

Advanced Hair Color Day 3: (8 CE Hours)

Upon completion of Day 3, Stylists will learn how to interact with clients in real life situations with a variety of hair color challenges.
-Topics that will be covered are the Interactive Assessment, containing real life situations used to evaluate stylists ability to interact with clients. The proper way to answer questions in order to achieve the best results. Stylists will be given hair color challenges and will learn the best methods to correct and /or achieve the proper results for the individual clients. In this class the stylist will learn to adjust the unwanted undertones, corrective techniques for abused hair. All this is achieved by the understanding of hair color categories, porosity, and the past history the client.

Advanced Hair Color Day 4: (8 CE Hours)


This day consists of a written, performance and interactive exam. This ensures that the stylist understands how to utilize the areas that were covered on Day 1, 2 and 3 and put it into practice. This 3 way testing gives the stylist the knowledge of the exam that is offered by the American Board of Certified Haircolorists. The class and testing will also sharpen their skills and give an abundance of confidence to carry back to the salon to increase their hair color business.

About the Instructor:

Judi Troutman is the owner of Troutman Beauty Affaire located in Raleigh, NC. She has worked in the cosmetology field for over 35 years. Judi is an accomplished professional leader in the industry. She is a Board Certified Haircolorist with the American Board of Certified Haircolorists. She is an instructor, Educator and Mentor licensed to offer Cosmetology Certification for CEU’s. She is a member of NHCA, NCA of NC and CEC of NC. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999.
