Concurrent Enrollment Courses
High School students can take community college courses through the concurrent enrollment program with approval from the high school principal and the community college president. Since these courses are intended for adult college students, approved high schools students are only admitted on a space available basis. The courses are taught on the JCC campus, and follow the JCC academic calendar. Students are expected to adhere to the JCC attendance policy, as specified in the course syllabus.
Tuition is free for all concurrently enrolled students; however, students may incur textbook costs if taking a course that is not approved for high school credit. JCC courses listed in the Johnston County Schools Course Catalog 2009-10 are approved for both high school and college credit; therefore, students will not incur textbook costs for these courses.
The following requirements must be met for a student to be considered for concurrent enrollment:
- The student must be 16 years of age when the course begins
- The student must be recommended by the high school principal (or parent for home-schooled students)
- The principal of the high school must certify that the student is taking the equivalent of one-half of a full-time schedule and is making progress toward graduation
- Enrollment of high school students cannot displace adult college students
- Students may be admitted on a space available basis
- Students must meet the same pre-requisite, co-requisite, and course admission requirements as adult college students
Students who wish to be concurrently enrolled must apply and be admitted to JCC before the application deadline. When applying to the college, students should choose “Concurrent Enrollment-High School Only” as the program of study. Students may register for courses no earlier than the on-campus registration dates noted below. The student must bring a JCC Concurrent Enrollment form signed by the principal when registering for a course.
