Advanced BioProcessing Certificate Program (Level II)

Students who complete all 6 modules (64 hours) of this certificate program will gain knowledge in advanced Bioprocessing practices, including safety in Biomanufacturing environments, advanced quality systems, applied chemical processes, monitoring process variables in Biomanufacturing, applied sterile processing, and applied cell culture, as derived from the Bioprocessing In The Workplace® curriculum. Advanced BioProcessing Certificate Program will allow students to gain the necessary skills and knowledge needed for advanced process technician positions in Bioprocessing, Pharmaceutical, and Chemical Manufacturing. There are exams at the end of each module. Computer literacy, teamwork, time management, problem solving, and situational applications are incorporated in the course. To gain admission to the Advanced BioProcessing course, each student must attend an information session, show proficiency in reading and math skills as indicated by the Accuplacer assessment test, and successfully complete BioWork Certificate Program (Level I). This 60 hour training course prepares individuals to work as process technicians in aseptic pharmaceutical, Biomanufacturing and chemical manufacturing environments. BioWork Certificate Program (Level I)

Students who complete this 136-hour BioWork Certificate course will gain the basic skills and general knowledge needed for entry-level process technicians in Bioprocessing, Pharmaceutical, and Chemical Manufacturing, as well as, participate in the Human Resource Development aspect of the course. The course includes nine (9) modules such as Quality, Measurements, Transforming Matter, Growing Living Cells, Safety, Sterile Processes, Process Control, and Nuts and Bolts. There are exams at the end of each module. Additionally, this course will cover all aspects of the job search in the Biotechnology arena, including a job market overview, job search tools and strategies, resume preparation, and interviewing practice. Computer literacy, teamwork, time management, and problem solving are also incorporated in the course. To gain admission to the BioWork course, each student must show proficiency in reading and math skills, as indicated by the Accuplacer assessment test. In addition, interested students must attend one of the regularly scheduled Information Sessions at the Workforce Development Center. The course has limited space.

CDL Test Preparation Course

This 12-hour course is a preparation class for individuals wanting to take the written tests required to obtain a CDL Class A or B learner’s permit. The class includes instruction and review of General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicle sections of the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s Manual. Participant must be at least 18 years old, be able to read, write, and speak English at a level well enough to benefit from the course, and provide proof of identity as required by Section 1.4 of the Driver’s Manual. Participant must bring current copy of the Driver’s Manual (available from DMV office) to class.

Fearless Hair Color Correction (4 Hours)

This course is designed to assist North Carolina cosmetologists in acquiring the NC State required Continued Education hours.   Class Objective: Upon completion, the stylist will be able to approach any hair color correction situation with an easy step-by-step process. Topics covered include: removal of ash tones, neutralizing brassiness, removal of artificial dark tones, as well as easy steps to tint-back blonde hair to brunette.

Hands-On Approach to Social Media - A Beginner's Workshop

This is an intensive 10-hour 4-week beginner’s
workshop with a hands-on approach to social media marketing for those that are ready to jump into this arena. Upon conclusion the participant will have developed an effective engagement in the social media space through the use of Twitter, Facebook, blogging, video, and pictures. Class size is limited to 15 so register early!

Target Audience: This workshop is geared towards marketing professionals from the small business and nonprofit sectors in Johnston County. As it is an intensive workshop it is primarily geared towards those businesses & nonprofits that are ready to commit to engagement in the social media space. Participants do not need to know which applications they plan to utilize; they just need to be committed to initial engagement based on the parameters the instructor sets forth in the first class of the series. All attendees are required to participate in the first session.

Workshop Outline:
Session 1 – Navigating and Understanding the Social Media Space 9/14/10 6-8pm
This is a very basic overview of just exactly what social media is – it’s history, general statistics & demographics, positives and negatives of engagement, the reasons why it’s considered an effective marketing tool, etc. This class will set the tone for the follow-up sessions and as such, will require some “homework” to get ready for those sessions.

Session 2 – The Ins and Outs of Twitter and Facebook 9/21/10 6-9pm
During this session participants will open their social Twitter and Facebook accounts and begin engaging on those platforms. Attendees will physically set up their accounts and profiles on each platform. We will spend one hour on Twitter and two hours on Facebook profiles and Fan Pages.

Session 3 – Blogging 101 9/28/10 6-9pm
This session enter the blogosphere as one avenue for a social media marketing campaign. Attendees will be taught the general history of blogging, blog software options, the reasons why blogs are effective tools for engagement with their target audience, and shown examples of excellent business and nonprofit-based blogs in the sphere, etc. In the second half of the class, participants will set up their blog profiles using Wordpress.com and create their first blog post.

TAPP - Teacher Assistant Proficiency Prep

This class will prepare future teacher assistants to take the WorkKeys ® assessments. Each area of concentration will cover basic subject matter needed to upgrade skill level and prepare the student to take the WorkKeys ® exams of Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Writing. A fee is required for the Reading and Math assessments and is free to qualified participants. The Writing test is $20. Tuition and fee may be waived for individuals who meet the following criteria: unemployed, received notice of pending layoff, working and eligible for Federal Earned Income Tax Credit (FEIT), or working and earning wages at or below two hundred percent (200%) of the federal poverty guidelines. The Holocaust and Contemporary Genocide (12 hours)

The session will review how IBM throughout history has exhibited a strong commitment to diversity and has approached diversity in a strategic manner resulting in a significant impact on the company and its workforce. This session will explore the historical influence on IBM's development as a strong 'diversity focused' corporation, its key strategic decisiions regarding diversity, and the competitive results of this diversity strategy.
