Online Certificate Programs


Certificate Programs are designed utilizing a series of courses that make up the certificate program. These programs require specific attendance requirements and test exam requirements for each course. For more information, please call (919) 209-2108.

Certificate Program Requirements

To Receive Credit (CEU's)

To receive Community Development & Lifelong Learning credit from JCC, you must complete quiz 1 by the 10% point which is the first Friday following your first lesson and you must also complete the final exam by passing with 85% or higher. Failure to complete both requirements will result in no credit for taking any class in the certificate program.

To enroll in any of the following online certificate programs, each student must go to www.ed2go.com/jcc and click on “Orientation” for the class listed in your program. A registration form can be found on this website that must be completed and sent in 5 days prior to the start date by mail, fax, or walk-in. After completing each course in your program, you must submit your exam grade and ALL your assignments throughout your course to pwparrish@johnstoncc.edu. Webmaster CP - Online Only

This certificate program ensures that participants can design and maintain web pages with HTML and JavaScript as well as incorporate graphics and layers, format pages with text, images, links, and tables. This certificate is earned by completing the online courses in the list below.(More than one course may be taken at a time with the exception of courses I and II).

  1. Creating Web Pages I
  2. CSS and XHTML
  3. Intermediate CSS & XHTML
  4. Any Web Programming course
  5. Introduction to Flash or Fireworks
  6. Dreamweaver (any version)
  7. Designing Effective Websites

These courses may be taken in any order except for the I and II series and SEVEN courses must be completed.  Students are required to complete the online exam with a score of 85% and students are expected to email each of the online exam scores and all assignments to pwparrish@johnstoncc.edu. Quizzes do not need to be emailed except for lesson one only by the deadline of the first Friday following your start date. All other quizzes should be done at your own leisure.


Management Certificate Program

This certificate program is designed for those who want to explore or extend their knowledge and effectiveness in a managerial role. This certificate is earned by completing the online courses in the list below. (More than one course may be taken at a time with the exception of courses I and II).

  1. Leadership
  2. Fundamentals of Supervision & Management I
  3. Fundamentals of Supervision & Management II
  4. Mastery of Business Fundamentals
  5. Mastery of Business Applications
  6. Managing Customer Service
  7. Keys to Effective Communication

All seven courses must be completed in no specific order. Other recommended courses include:

  1. Grant Writing Course
  2. Non-Profit Management
  3. PowerPoint

These courses may be taken in any order except for the I and II series and SEVEN courses must be completed. Students are required to complete the online exam with a score of 85% and students are expected to email each of the online exam scores and all assignments to pwparrish@johnstoncc.edu. Business Accounting CP - Online Only

This certificate program ensures that participants can crunch numbers, analyze data, and run a business profession utilizing the following most popular used programs. This certificate is earned by completing the online courses in the list below. (More than one course may be taken at a time with the exception of courses I and II).

  1. Introduction to Business Analysis
  2. Accounting Fundamentals I
  3. Accounting Fundamentals II
  4. Introduction to Excel
  5. Introduction to QuickBooks
  6. Performing Payroll in QuickBooks 2010

These courses may be taken in any order except for the I and II series and SIX courses must be completed. Students are required to complete the online exam with a score of 85% and students are expected to email each of the online exam scores and all assignments to pwparrish@johnstoncc.edu.


Medical Office: Online or Hybrid

The Medical Office Assistant program teaches students the skills necessary for employment in a medical facility or physician’s office. Upon completion of the Medical Office Assistant program, the student will possess the knowledge and skills required in the areas of Basic Computer knowledge, Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology, CPT/ICD 9 Medical billing and coding, HIPAA Compliance, Medical Transcription and Handling Medical Emergencies to function successfully in an entry level position as a Medical Office Assistant. (More than one course may be taken at a time).

  1. Introduction to Windows XP or Vista (online or in classroom)
  2. Microsoft Word (online or in the classroom)
  3. Anatomy and Physiology (online only)
  4. Medical Terminology (online or in classroom)
  5. Medical Coding (online or in classroom)
  6. HIPAA Compliance (online only)
  7. Medical Transcription (online only)
  8. Handling Medical Emergencies (online only) (optional)
  9. Spanish for Healthcare (online only) (optional)

These courses can be taken in any order and all 7 courses must be completed. Students are required to complete the online exam with a score of 85% and students are expected to email each of the online exam scores and all assignments to pwparrish@johnstoncc.edu.


Project Management Professional Certificate Program

Improve your company’s project success rate or develop skills for a contracted service employee by applying learned principles of the seven applications in this certificate program that is geared toward certification if desired through a Prometric testing center that is internationally accepted and considered one of the “highest- paying certification” of the year. Essentials learned include the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge), PMI, PMP; Project Cost Management, Phases, Stakeholders, Structures, Process Interactions, Scheduling, Project Charter, Scope, Estimating, Risk Management, HR Management, and much more.

This certificate program is earned by completing the seven applications listed and completing all quizzes including the first quiz by the first Friday following your start date, completing and emailing all assignments for each lesson, and completing the final exam for each course with 85% or higher. Database Management CP - Online Only

This certificate program involves many of today’s most used programs in Database Management. The courses listed are to complete the entire certificate program beyond having basic computer knowledge. Learn how to create tables, relationships, custom data entry forms, queries, reports, mailing labels, macros, database development structure, SQL statements, process of creating, running, and publishing polished, professional quality reports, data manipulation, and more. (More than one course may be taken at a time to shorten the duration of completing the program). Each online course is six weeks in duration with a 10-day automatic extension period beyond the ending date.

These courses may be taken in any order and SIX courses must be completed. Computer Programming CP - Online Only

This certificate program teaches application design and implementation, the Graphical User Interface (GUI) in windows, write your own programs and integrate input and output, calculations, decision making, and loops, and learn the building blocks of programming, including using variables and control structures in various programming applications that formulates a well-rounded individual in a variety of programming applications. The courses listed below are needed to complete the program beyond having basic computer knowledge. (More than one course may be taken at a time to shorten the duration of completing the program). Each online course is six weeks in duration with a 10-day automatic extension period beyond the ending date.

  3. Introduction to JAVA
  4. Introduction to Visual Basic
  5. Introduction to Alice 2.0 (optional)

These courses may be taken in any order and SIX courses must be completed. Students are required to complete the online exam for each course with a score of 85% and students are required to email each of the online exam scores and all assignments for each course to pwparrish@johnstoncc.edu to complete the program.


Grant Writing CP - Online Only

This certificate program teaches an individual how to raise desired funds by discovering how and where to look for potential funders, network and develop true partnerships with a variety of funders, how to organize a successful grant-writing campaign, and how to put together a complete proposal package. (More than one course may be taken at a time to shorten the duration of completing the program). Each online course is six weeks in duration with a 10-day automatic extension period beyond the ending date.

  2. Advanced Grant Proposal Writing
  3. Becoming a Grant Writing Consultant
  4. Nonprofit Fundraising Essentials
  5. Writing Effective Grant Proposals
  6. Introduction to Excel (any version – optional)(online or in the classroom)
  7. Accounting Fundamentals (optional)

These courses may be taken in any order and FIVE courses must be completed. Students are required to complete the online exam for each course with a score of 85% and students are required to email each of the online exam scores and all assignments for each course to pwparrish@johnstoncc.edu to complete the program.
