This opportunity aligns with the organization’s goals to continually enhance student success and the student experience.

The Competition is open to all students that are currently enrolled in courses at Johnston Community College.

  • Topic: Share your experience about an inspirational individual that has impacted your life.
  • Time: The speech must be 3-4 minutes in length.
  • Speech Delivery: The speech can be delivered as a word for word manuscript or in an extemporaneous manner using notes cards.

To enter the Competition, all students must first audition. To audition, students must select an audition time available on Appointment Plus. Auditions will be held on Monday, October 2, 2017 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am and on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium located in the Tart Building.

On the day of the audition, each participant must agree to sign a Student Participation Waiver. Once the waiver is signed, each participant should be prepared to submit a printed copy of his or her speech and present a portion of his or her speech on the assigned topic in one minute; each participant will only be allowed to audition once. All auditions will be recorded.

Once all of the participants have auditioned, the LASER Instructors will deliberate and select the finalists. There will only be seven finalists to partake in the Competition on Thursday, November 9, 2017 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

On Tuesday, November 7, 2017, a rehearsal will be held in the Paul A. Johnson Auditorium located in the Tart Building at 4:00 pm. It will be essential for all participants to attend the rehearsal, so they understand the logistics of the final round.

The Competition will take place in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium located in the Tart Building on Thursday, November 9, 2017 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The speakers will begin to recite their speeches promptly at 5:30 pm.
